A team of Interior Decorators from the DC Metro Area, who participated in a recent Design House charity, are buzzing about people putting what they like in a house in lieu of high design. For homeowners, it’s now all about re-designing for low-maintenance comfort.
Local residents are staying in their homes longer rather than just investing in a property for re-sell. So when re-designing their house, they are thinking less about what will sell and more about what specific things they want in the home, which today equals comfort and less maintenance. Because the ideal seems to be having more functionality in less space, buyers are going for the smaller home that does not require the up-keep of a larger dwelling.
The designers that participated in this re-modeling project see some changing trends. Out is wood-colored decorating. In are grey tones that are safe and smart since they are easy colors to match with whatever redecorating design you choose. Changing accessories is the easiest way to get a new feel in a room. It can be done quickly and without the construction costs of major projects.
Designers are getting more projects as people decide to spruce up the homes they’re in, rather than “move on” to the next property. While this is great for the designers, many real estate agents find it difficult when houses don’t sell as quickly as they’d like.
No one really knows how long this remodeling vs. selling trend will last. What’s evident is that people are opting to change their current living space rather than change their location, feeling that this is the best way to create a great home for themselves and their families.
