For the Ideal Alexandria Home, Create a Home Vision

home_vision_190There’s a saying, “If you don’t know what you want, it’s harder to get it.” This can be especially true if you’re a first-time home buyer navigating the many choices of today’s market in Alexandria and elsewhere.  And if you’ve never owned your own home, it’s hard to know what will make you happy once you buy one.  This is where creating a home vision can help, says USNews.com.

A home vision is a written, detailed statement of the ideal home and life you want to have, from mortgage payments and number of rooms to a town’s community programs.  You should take this statement with you on house tours to remember what you want and why you want it. This in turn can keep you from wasting time on houses and areas that don’t fit with your desires. Your home vision can also help you find a real estate agent who will understand and be able to fulfill your special requirements.

To create your unique vision, picture yourself living in your new home and write a short story that describes a day in your life—what you do, where you go, who you see.  Make it as ideal as possible.  You might notice that you need a room for a home office or want to live within walking distance of a coffee shop.  Here are some other questions to ask yourself about your home vision:

  • Do I want to live in the country, suburbs or city? Why?
  • Is living near a downtown area important? Why?
  • Do I want to be within a short walk or drive of family members?  How will I feel if I’m far away?
  • Do I need a community with lots of activities and programs I can join? Why?
  • How much house can I really afford without stress?

This is by no means a complete list, but it’s a place to begin picturing, in detail, what you want. Knowing that you probably won’t get everything on your list, you can also start prioritizing your needs so you know where to draw the line if necessary.

Having a home vision can save you from buying something that you don’t really want and having to regretfully live there while you figure that out.
