Burke Virginia Real Estate

There are a number of communities in the Burke, Virginia area, most of them master-designed neighbourhoods.  Housing in the area largely features single-family homes and townhomes.  There are split-level, colonial style and contemporary home styles abounding on generous plots ranging from .5 to 5 acres each.  Unlike many other areas in the vicinity, Burke still has a generous supply of older homes that date as far back as the 1800s.  Most of Burke’s homes are owner-occupied.

Nearly 40% of Burke’s housing is the townhome style.  Burke townhomes are as carefully designed as the houses in the communities they are set in. There are neo-Victorian styles, brick facades, cottage-style buildings and contemporary design.

Burke Center is a 1700-acre planned community that is divided into five smaller communities and contains many stores, restaurants and businesses that serve the Burke area and Fairfax County.  The five communities include The Commons, The Landings, The Oaks, The Ponds and The Woods.  Burke Center also features playgrounds and community centers in each sub community.

Burke VA Amenities

There are many parks and outdoor recreation areas for Burke residents to enjoy the near-200 days of sun that Burke gets annually.  Burke Center features pools in all five of its community centers, which also host fitness facilities and other amenities.

Burke Lake Park is a 888-acre park with a 218-acre lake.  Just south of the Burke area, it features a jogging trail, camping, picnicking, golf courses, an amphitheater and more.  Burke residents also enjoy the nearby Lake Accotink in Springfield.

Education is of a high quality in Fairfax County, with the public schools being regularly acclaimed for their quality.  The main campus of George Mason University is situated in Fairfax County, providing exceptional educational opportunities for those pursuing post-secondary schooling.

Burke VA History

Burke VA has an interesting history that stretches back to the home of Silas Burke, built in 1824 (and still standing today).  Burke was a farmer, a merchant and a politician who first gave the area its name in the form of “Burke’s Station” when the Orange and Alexandria Railroad built a station at the base of the hill where Burke’s house stood.  In 1852, the small community that had sprung up around the station had its first post office established.  The Civil War made the railroad a target and Burke was the site of a disgruntled General J.E.B. Stuart, who complained about the mules he had seized in a telegram to the Union Quartermaster.  In 1903, the name was officially changed from “Burke’s Station” to “Burke” and has remained as such for over 100 years.

Burke remained largely a rural area until well into the 20th century.  Kings Park, developed in 1960, was the first large subdivision built in Burke.  However, it was not until Burke Center was built in 1976 that construction really took off and the area was changed from a rural community to a bustling suburb of Washington D.C.
