Fairfax Virginia Real Estate

Fairfax serves as the County Seat for Fairfax County despite its status as an independent city.  Fairfax is a popular community with people who work in Washington D.C., as it is less than 20 miles away.  It is considered part of the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area.

Real estate in Fairfax dates back to 1800, but most of the residential buildings were constructed in the 1950s and 1960s.  There has not been much construction since the 1980s, but a recent real estate boom has brought newer homes to the area, such as the 85 upscale condos in Old Town Fairfax.  Just over half the homes in Fairfax are single-family houses, with condos and townhomes making up the rest.

Fairfax VA Amenities

Old Town Plaza is a fun area for Fairfax home owners to shop and dine, located in the Fairfax Historic District.  Fair Oaks Mall features a number of upscale stores, boutiques, services and restaurants.  Washington D.C., Arlington and Baltimore, of course, offer a nearly inexhaustible variety of stores, services and restaurants.
There are a number of annual events held in Fairfax for the whole family:

  • Chocolate Lovers Festivals (around Feb 14th)
  • Blenheim Civil War Encampment/Historic Homes Tour (every other year in spring)
  • Spotlight on the Arts (April)
  • National Trails Day (June)
  • Independence Day Celebration Parade and Evening Show (July 4)
  • Irish Festival (September)
  • Fall Festival (2nd Saturday in October)
  • The Holiday Craft Show (3rd Saturday and Sunday in October)
  • Festival of Lights and Carols (December)

Transportation to and from Fairfax is made easy by the fact that two major arterial routes (US-50 and US-29) intersect at what is called Fairfax Boulevard.  This is just west of what turns into Main Street.  There are many businesses along these routes.  Rail usage is not as prevalent in Fairfax as it is in other areas, since the rail stations are outside the city proper.  The city maintains its own bus system, called the CUE bus.  The Washington Metrobus also serves the area.

Fairfax VA History

Fairfax, Virginia has a long and varied history, which accounts for the number of places and areas listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  It was named for Thomas Fairfax, the 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron who was deeded 5 million acres of land by King Charles.  Virginia Tidewater farmers settled the region in the early 1700s, but it took another hundred years before the first meeting was held at the Fairfax County Courthouse on April 21, 1800.

It was here where the first Confederate casualty of the Civil War fell – John Quincy Marr, killed on June 1, 1861. The monument to him still stands, along with the two cannons of the Confederate Navy (minus the cannonballs; authorities could not break the local students of stealing them and rolling them down Main Street in the middle of the night).

In 1961, Fairfax became, like many other communities of Virginia, an independent city.  It now numbers the Fairfax County Courthouse building, Fairfax Elementary School and the Old Town Hall among its historic buildings and has a substantial amount of the city designated as a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places.
