Reston Real Estate
Reston homes are just over 20 miles west from Washington D.C. and a little less than that from Arlington. While it is convenient to these major centers and Tysons Corner, the goal was to create the ideal live/work community for a homeowner’s lifetime.
From the first, Reston was developed with the goal of having housing available to all levels of budget and family size. Single-family homes, townhomes, apartments and condo units provide a variety of opportunities. Most of the residential real estate in Reston is owner-occupied. New construction must conform to existing guidelines, thus ensuring that Reston's residential real estate retains its value and enhances the community.
Property taxes are not paid in Reston, but home owner dues to the Reston Association are and they serve similar purposes. In practice, Reston oversees much of its own daily activity, with neighborhood associations overseeing specific neighborhoods under the umbrella of the Reston Association. The value of one’s Reston property determines the level of property taxes. What the Association does not cover is overseen by the county, for instance policing is done at the county level.
Reston Recreation & Amenities
There are plenty of recreation opportunities in the area. Reston has four man-made lakes. Lake Anne, the largest, has several restaurants serving unique fare on its banks and has rental canoes and paddleboats available. As well, ponds and streams are open to boating and fishing. There are fifty-five miles of paths and trails for walkers, runners and cyclists. There are forty-eight tennis courts. There are two golf courses. Fifteen community pools provide lap swimming, children’s areas, hot tubs and saunas. A nature center provides over seventy acres of natural habitat for wildlife. And, to cap this all off, Parks & Recreation programs and events for the whole family are available year-round.
Shopping, dining and employment opportunities are available at the Reston Town Center, which contains over a million square feet of office space. Shops, restaurants, a hotel, a movie theatre and an outdoor ice skating rink make this a destination for Reston residents and even a home, as residential condos make this an ideal live/work area.
Reston History
Reston was the brainchild of Robert E. Simon, whose initials provided the name for the community. His vision was of a beautiful community where recreational opportunities, diverse housing and live/work situations were readily available. On April 20, 1964, Reston was established. It continues to evolve with the changing needs of its population.
